Vinay Kapoor

Vinay K. Kapoor is a senior surgical gastroenterologist and academic leader with more than four decades of experience in GI and HPB surgery. He serves as Professor of Surgical Gastroenterology at Mahatma Gandhi Medical College & Hospital and Pro Vice Chancellor of MGUMST in Jaipur.

He is globally recognised for his work on gallbladder and biliary disease — ranked among the world’s top 2% scientists and the only Indian surgeon listed in the Stanford global citation study. ScholarGPS ranks him No. 1 worldwide in gallbladder and gallbladder cancer research.

His training and career span AIIMS New Delhi, SGPGIMS Lucknow, MGMCH Jaipur, and multiple visiting appointments across the US, UK, Europe, the Middle East, Australia, and Asia. He has performed the full spectrum of major GI and HPB operations, including liver transplant, pancreatic surgery, esophageal and gastric surgery, and complex biliary reconstruction.

With more than 300 publications, major textbooks, international invited lectures, and editorial contributions — including a review in Nature Reviews Disease Primers — he remains a leading voice in surgical gastroenterology. He has been a Fulbright Fellow, Commonwealth Fellow, Graham Coupland Lecturer, and examiner for multiple national and international boards.

His research includes landmark work on gallbladder cancer genetics, bile duct injury, pancreatoduodenectomy, and acute pancreatitis, alongside participation in international multicentre clinical trials. He continues to mentor young surgeons through academic programs and his popular online teaching platform, Jaipur Surgical Tutorial.
