Luc Michel

Luc A. Michel is a senior surgeon and academic with a career grounded in clinical leadership, surgical education, and international research. He trained at the Mayo Clinic and Harvard Medical School before returning to Belgium to lead the Surgical Services at Mont-Godinne University Hospital and serve as Professor of Surgery and Bioethics at the University of Louvain.

He directed the national residency program in surgery for nearly two decades and contributed to major ethics and regulatory bodies, including the Belgian National Medical Council and the National Ethics Committee. His work also extended across Europe as a founder of the European Society of Surgery, a key contributor to the European Board of Surgery exams, and an expert for European Commission research programs.

A Fellow of the American College of Surgeons and the American College of Chest Physicians, he has authored more than 250 publications and lectured worldwide. His honours include Commander of the Order of the Belgian Crown and Grand Officer of the Order of King Leopold II.
