Ferdinando Cafiero is a senior surgical oncologist with a long career at the National Institute for Cancer Research and the IRCCS Policlinico San Martino in Genoa. He has led major surgical and oncology departments, coordinated regional surgical networks, and guided innovation projects across the Liguria healthcare system.
With dual specializations in surgery and oncology, a PhD in Oncology, and more than 100 indexed publications, his work has focused on colorectal cancer, soft tissue sarcomas, and melanoma — including one of Italy’s largest melanoma surgical series. He has also authored several scientific books and spoken at hundreds of conferences.
Beyond hospital leadership, he has held key roles in regional health policy, procurement, and digital transformation, serving as project manager for advanced surgical technologies and innovation programs in Liguria. He is a past president or board member of multiple surgical societies, including the European Society of Surgery and the Italian Society of Digestive System Diseases.
