Professor of Surgery at the Jagiellonian University Medical College and Head of the 3rd Chair of General Surgery and the Department of General, Oncological and Geriatric Surgery at Narutowicz Hospital in Krakow. Graduate of the Medical Academy in Krakow, he received his PhD in 1996, habilitation in 2013 and the title of Full Professor in 2022. He holds board certifications in general surgery, surgical oncology and is a Fellow of the European Board of Surgery.
His clinical and research work focuses on general and oncologic surgery, gastrointestinal cancers, cancer immunology, tumour–immune interactions and perioperative complications, particularly in elderly patients. He has led multiple national research grants and is a steering committee member of the Gastric CHIMERA trial.
Prof. Szczepanik coordinates the surgical curriculum at the School of Medicine in English, has supervised surgical trainees and PhD students, and lectures nationally and internationally. He is active in scientific societies, including the European Society of Surgery (President 2016–2017; Secretary General since 2023), and is an Honorary Member of the Bulgarian Surgical Society. Author of over 150 scientific papers and recipient of the Medal for Long Service and Honoris Gratia. Speaks English fluently.
