Carmel Cutajar

Carmel Cutajar

MD, FRCS (Eng), FRCS (Edin), FICA, KM

Professor Carmel Lino Cutajar is a senior surgeon, academic leader, and long-standing contributor to Malta’s medical landscape. He previously served as Professor and Head of the Department of Surgery at the University of Malta, as well as Director of Surgery within the national health service. His work in both roles shaped surgical training, clinical standards, and the development of modern surgical practice in the country.

He is a Fellow of the Royal College of Surgeons of England and Edinburgh, a Fellow of the International College of Angiology, and a member of the European Board of Urology. Over the years, he helped establish several key professional bodies, including the European Society of Surgery, the Association of Surgeons of Malta, and the Association of Urological Surgeons of Malta — serving as President in each.

Alongside his clinical and leadership roles, Professor Cutajar has contributed widely to research and academic writing. His publications range from surgical studies to broader reflections on medicine, including his autobiography In At The Deep End and A Brief Illustrated History of Medicine. His involvement in humanitarian and community organizations — such as the Malta Red Cross Society, Rotary Club Malta, and the Catenian Association — adds another dimension to his career.

Outside of medicine, he enjoys classical music and opera, biographies, art history, and medical philately.
